The z format will always return 0 when using gmdate ().
It doesn't reflect the value of an instance's datetime.kind property. The literal z is actually part of the iso 8601 datetime standard for utc times. The letter z may be used as a suffix to denote a time being in the zulu time zone, such as 08:00z or 0800z. The documentation referred to above has no example with z letter.
